Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • Not what I expected - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased my Jeep last January. After owning the Jeep for 11 months I am in the process of looking for another Ford. Wheel bearings are gone, howling from either a idler pulley or alternator ($250 for a rebuilt), transmission slipping terribly when it get below 40 degrees F, fogging headlight, leaking tailgate at both the window and gate seal, squeaks and rattles. I have 91K on it now and purchased it with 71K. I have no faith in this vehicle. If you are considering one, get rid of it before 100K. Friend that works for Chrysler said allmost all Jeep Grands need a tranny rebuild then. Wish I had known, my first and last Damlier Chrysler vehicle.

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4X4 Diesel (ADV TECH) - 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This is an update to a couple of reviews I have made on this car. As much as it pains me to say, please avoid the 2014 JGC Diesel and probably Jeeps altogether. My car has currently around 9K miles and has been in the shop 5-6 times. The last few times have been related to the diesel engine (catalytic converter was changed, engine light turned on a few times, and now a pipe in the diesel engine cracked. This resulted in exhaust fumes going everywhere. It is a true shame as this has been a car I had been waiting to buy for years. Chrysler really needs to improve its build quality and reliability as well as provide options for folks with lemons. I guess I am going the lemon law route. AVOID IT

  • Expected better - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Im seeing a lot of things on these reviews that Ive experienced myself. Bought new in 2002 and have had problems with rotors/brakes too. Also the dual zone climate control door went bad (expensive to fix). Also hood struts went bad as well as the gas cap (youll know when your engine light comes on)...Ive seen these 2 problems a lot on reviews. Not sure the seat leather is actually leather - after a few years it gets a bit plastic-y. Also needs more leg room for the driver (Im 62"). Overall its not bad, but considering it sold for about $38k new I expected much better for my money.

  • Its not hard to say goodbye - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Had this Jeep since I was 16 years old. Sold it a few weeks ago with 157,000 miles. This is a love/hate relationship. I loved the interior, exterior, and handling of this vehicle. I had just about everything except steering wheel replaced on this car. Brakes were constantly an issue. Transmission went out at 100,000. Belt tensioner, thermostat, sway bar, alternator, vacuum tubing, oil pressure gague, hood shocks, hubs, driver and passenger side windows all went out and had to have it all replaced. The center console malfunctioned several times and thankfully was all covered under warranty. It took 4 trips to the dealer to get this fixed. I wished it was reliable. Never again!

  • Worst of the Jeeps - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

After having 3 cherokee vehicles this is by far the worst. The power windows failed 3 times, there is a sensor for the transfer case that has failed several times giving you a hard shift change at about 20 miles(and I mean hard!!!). The cd changer skips on most of the disks at between tracks 6 and 8 and the driver rear mirror fails to remember its position frequently thus having to readjust almost daily. This would not be so bad if the dealer had taken care of reparing it but they did not time after time just gave excuses that the vehicle did not failed during their tests.

  • Going down hill fast - 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this bad boy used in late 1995 with 38k on it. While it has never left me stranded or failed to start, it ha been a money pit for the last few years with $1500-2000 per year going towards major repairs. I just found out today it needs new brakes (again) and about $800 in engine work. I told the shop to do the brakes and forget the rest. I plan on just keeping the oil changed and some new plugs until the thing wants to run no longer, which may be soon. While it has been a fun car, I would not buy another one due to the poor build quality and repair expense. I would not recommend a used one as a purchase unless you posses mechanical abilities and can do major repairs on your own.

  • Brakes....Brakes....Brakes - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought this car when it was redesigned. I should have known not to buy a chrysler product. Repair costs have totaled over $3,000 in less then 2.5 years. The rotor and brake pads have been replaced and resurface a total of 6 times and the Front and Rear Ball bearings replaced recently for a loud whining sound. Sick of taking it. Worst Quality. No Customer service.

  • The Gas Sucker - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Overland is a beautiful vehicle. However, the motor runs very rough, and the EPA mileage rating and reality are nowhere near each other. I just think the engine in this vehicle is still in the stone age.

  • Thems The Brakes.... - 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This is my fifth Jeep product and the only one I have been less than pleased with. Today I had my brake rotors resurfaced for the second time (22k miles) which were shaking the vehicle when I braked. Transmission whines at highway speeds and drivers window clicks going up. Air conditioning is just ok, nothing like the old Grand Wagoneers and the wheels wont stay clean more than a day. I have tried to love this vehicle but can only manage to just like it ok. Have friends with similar Grand Cherokees and similar problems. My wifes 2001 Cherokee Limited is vastly superior in quality if not ride and comfort.
